Lady Tigers sweep Jonesville

Sims' softball team defeated Jonesville Middle twice on Thursday. The Tigers won the first game 13-2 and the second game 7-5.

Abby Allen pitched in the first game and Kristin Giles had a home run for Sims. Kami Edwards pitched in the second game and Kaitlin Thomas had a home run for the Tigers. Kristen Martin turned a double play in the second game.

“Our defense continues to play really well,” said coach Jay Allen.

Sims travels to Jonesville for a doubleheader rematch on Monday.

JONESVILLE BASEBALL

JONESVILLE - The Wildcats' baseball team defeated Mabry 6-2 on Thursday.

TJ Jeter picked up the victory. Jonesville was paced at the plate by Keamond Eison and Delvin Young with two hits each; Lee Wilburn, Tavest Glenn and Demarcus Stewart also added hits for the ‘Cats.

"We followed up our best game of the year (against Sims) with perhaps our worst,” said coach Michael Mullinax. “But in the end, we still picked up a win. The encouraging thing is that the kids were not satisfied with the way we played today. We need to keep improving and finish out the season on a strong note."

JMS (2-5) travels to Lockhart on Monday.

WHITMIRE BASEBALL

NEWBERRY - The Bulldogs defeated Whitmire's varsity baseball team 12-0 in five innings.

NHS was led by B. Harmon (2-for-3, 2B, 4 RBI). Marcus Lindsay took the loss for the Wolverines.

"We were as bad tonight as we have been all year,” said WHS coach Chris Martin. “We lacked the focus to be competitors."

Whitmire (1-9) travels to Calhoun Falls today.

UCHS JV BASEBALL

Union County's junior varsity baseball team defeated Broome 5-3 on Thursday.

Antonio Wallace pitched 5 1/3 innings, picking up the win. He was relieved by Brian Gilkison, who pitched the final five outs, while striking out three and picking up the save.

Gerard Taylor was 2-for-4 with a triple and Gilkison was 2-for-4.

UCHS JV (6-2) hosts Riverside in a doubleheader on Saturday.

UCHS TENNIS

Union County's varsity boys' tennis team defeated Broome 5-1 on Thursday.

In singles play, No. 1 Christian Adamo (U) defeated Durham 6-1, 6-4; No. 2 Matt Gault (U) d. Kennedy 6-2, 6-1; No. 3 David Hope (U) d. Mroz 6-0, 6-0; No. 4 Brett Ayers (U) d. Vaughas 7-1, 6-1; and No. 5 Horton (B) d. Jacob Robbins 7-6, 6-3.

In doubles play, Aaron West and Joseph Sawyer (U) d. Finch and Wright 6-1, 6-2.

In JV play, Seth McFarland won 8-2.

Union County improves to 5-1 overall, 2-1 in the region - including a forfeit win over J.L. Mann today.

“I credit these wins to the bottom half of our lineup,” said coach Tom Adamo. “As I said in the beginning, they must step up for us to have a successful season.”

Individual wins: No. 1 Adamo 6-1; No. 2 Gault 5-2; No. 3 Hope 5-2; No. 4 Ayers 5-2; No. 5 Robbins 3-3. No. 1 doubles Adamo and Gault 5-1; No. 2 West and Sawyer 3-2.

UCHS SOFTBALL

GREENVILLE - Union County's varsity softball team defeated Wade Hampton 5-1 on Thursday.

Britni Ward faced 24 batters in seven innings, striking out 14, while allowing just two hits and one walk.

UCHS had six hits. Nikki Young had two runs and a double; Brittany Gregory had a run, a double and 2 RBIs; Ward had a triple and an RBI; Katie Sherbert was 1-for-3 with an RBI; and Kristen Spencer was 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI.

The Lady Jackets (3-2) host Greer today.

UCHS GIRLS SOCCER

Eastside defeated Union County's varsity girls' soccer team 10-0 on Thursday.

Eastside had 34 shots on goal and UCHS had two.

Meredith Walker had 20 saves, Rebecca Drum had two, Katie Hammett and Megan Gregory each had one.

“Our rotation at midfield seemed to spark some life into our team last night,” said Jacket coach Terry Drum. “There was hustle and pride in our play and they never let up. Everyone played, getting considerable minutes and experience. These games against quality teams will help our overall play in the long run. I was pleased and proud of their efforts last night, but more so of their team unity.”

UCHS (1-5) travels to Riverside on Monday.

UCHS BOYS SOCCER

TAYLORS - Eastside defeated Union County's varsity boys' soccer team 8-0 on Thursday. UCHS (1-6) hosts Riverside on Monday.

UCHS GOLF

GREENVILLE - Mann won the golf matchup at Verdae Greens on Thursday with a score of 157, followed by Clinton (176) and Union County (180). UCHS (1-4) travels to play Broome and Woodruff on April 7.

UCHS TRACK

Boys: Broome 136, UCHS 46, Riverside 43, Woodruff 34. Calvin Rice won in shot put, 45-2.

Girls: Riverside 80, Broome 68, Woodruff 63, UCHS 45. Jessica Hall won the 110 hurdles, 17.1, and the 400 hurdles, 72.4.

LOCKHART BASEBALL

LOCKHART - Clover defeated Lockhart's baseball team 18-0 on Thursday.

“We started off slow, but in the last couple of innings we started to play well,” said coach Mitchell Moss. “We allowed only three runs past the second inning. We play great in stretches, but sometimes we get caught watching the game.

“We have five games remaining. We have the ability to win, but we just have not put all the pieces to the puzzle together yet and when we do, we will win.”

Lockhart (0-5) travels to Landrum today.

UCHS JV GIRLS SOCCER

Eastside defeated Union County's junior varsity girls' soccer team 6-0 on Thursday. Ashley Williams and Shayna Williford were defensive standouts. Ivy Murphy was the offensive standout, coach Laura O'Shields said.

“With our team being so young to the game, we gave a temendous effort defensively to hold Eastside,” she said. “Offensively, we only had two or three threats on goal, but with experience we will learn to move and keep the ball on our opponents' side. We played with our hearts and that's all I ask from these girls.” UCHS JV (0-2) travels to Riverside on Monday.
