Public safety officers responding to a fight call in a downtown parking lot early Sunday morning broke up a crowd that involved more than 150 people.
A report said officers originally were called to the YMCA parking lot at 106 Lakeside Drive around midnight. They found between 150 and 200 people there. While they were trying to determine what was going on, they noticed a crowd running on East Main Street toward Piggly Wiggly.
There, they saw a large crowd in the parking lot and the roadway fighting.
Sgt. Larry Robinson pulled Gerone McBeth, 19, of 419 Academy St., Carlisle, from the fight. McBeth told Robinson he was trying to break up the fight and Robinson told him that was what officers were trying to do. McBeth said his girlfriend was one of the women fighting.
Robinson turned to assist Cpl. Scott Ruby and Deputy Randy Manus, who were trying to break up two women who were still fighting. The report said Robinson could still hear McBeth shouting profanity. Robinson advised Officer Curtis Eubanks to arrest McBeth. McBeth pulled away from Eubanks and a struggle ensued between McBeth and officers.
McBeth was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. He has been released from the Union County Jail on cash bonds totaling $1,088.
Crystal Maria Jeter, 18, of 4520 King Kennedy Highway, Carlisle, and Victoria Brannon, 17, of 611 Joe Walker Road, both were charged with disorderly conduct.
Ms. Jeter was released on $544 cash bond.
The report said Ms. Brannon was taken to Wallace Thomson Hospital for treatment because she is eight months pregnant and was having labor pains. She was issued a ticket and not taken to jail.
