Bessie Farr McKanic, 85, of 138 Landfill Road, Union, widow of Morris McKanic, died Feb, 23, 2008 at her residence after a sudden illness.

Mrs. McKanic was born in Union County on Aug, 22, 1922, a daughter of the later Harrison H. and Ethel Hill Farr. She joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church at an early age and served as the missionary secretary, church secretary and Sunday School teacher. She later moved her membership from Mt. Olive Baptist to Maple Ridge Baptist Church and served on the missionary and the choir. She worked in the food service department at Foster Park School for many years and later retired from Conso. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are two sons, Edwin Harrison (Molly) McKanic of Enoree and Wayne Morris (Lillie) McKanic Jr. of Union; a step-daughter, Malzetta (George) Abernathy of Union; 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, at Maple Ridge Baptist Church by the Rev. Ronald Feaster. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Wake services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Carolina Mortuary.

The family is at the home of a son, Wayne and Lillie McKanic Jr., 202 Lakewood Dr., Union.

The Carolina Mortuary has charge of arrangements.
