Deputies taking a man into custody on a Family Court warrant also arrested his friend on multiple drug charges and seized over $1,200 in cash.

Unarry V. Shippy, 30, of 280 McDowell St., Pacolet, was charged last Friday by the Union County Sheriff's Office with possession with intent to distribute cocaine, possession of a Schedule III narcotic, possession with intent to distribute cocaine within one-half mile of a school, possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine within one-half mile of a school, possession with intent to distribute marijuana and possession with intent to distribute marijuana within one-half mile of a school.

A report said Lt. John Sherfield, Lt. David Kitchens, State Constable Billy Bennett, Cpl. Scott Ruby and Sgt. Dee Haney saw Sharika Harris, 28, of 129 Early St., Jonesville, operating a 1989 Buick on S.C. 49 with Roderick Means, 28, of 388 Tinsley Road and Shippy as passengers. Officers knew the sheriff's office had outstanding warrants on Means for failure to pay child support.

Officers stopped the car near the car wash in Monarch. They could smell a strong odor of marijuana in the vehicle. Shippy was asked to step out of the car. A plastic bag containing cocaine and crack were removed from his right front pocket. Officers also found he had a pill bottle containing four Hydrocodone tablets. A large quantity of marijuana was found in the back seat where Shippy was seated, $400 was seized from his pocket as well as $869 from a cloth bag near the marijuana.

Both the crack and the cocaine were in excess of one gram and the arrest of Shippy occurred within one-half mile of Monarch Elementary School.

Ms. Harris was issued a summons for driving under suspension.

After being advised of his rights, Shippy told officers all the illegal narcotics in the car were his.

Other drug arrests

Marcus Dion Littlejohn, 25, of 116 Littlejohn Drive, Union, was charged Wednesday by the sheriff's office with possession with intent to distribute crack and driving under suspension.

A report said Kitchens and Sherfield were on South Street when they saw Littlejohn driving a vehicle and they knew he had no license. They began following him in their patrol vehicle.

Littlejohn turned onto West Henrietta Street and then Lipsey Street where he jumped out of his vehicle and ran behind an apartment and stopped at an air conditioner. Kitchens pursued Littlejohn on foot while Sherfield followed in the vehicle. Littlejohn ran through a field and up Gault Street where Sherfield apprehended him and arrested him. The officers went back to the air conditioner and found a red tube containing 31 rocks of crack in it. The report said Littlejohn told officers he had put the crack there.

Ronnie Lee Coleman, 53, of 309 East Williams St., Union, was charged Thursday by the public safety department with distribution of crack and distribution of crack within one-half mile of a school or park.

Warrants signed by Investigator Mickey Parker said Coleman sold crack to an undercover operative on South Church Street on Dec. 13. The sale occurred near Excelsior Middle School.

Man arrested in theft

Robert Gregory, of Oak Street was charged Thursday by the sheriff's office with petit larceny, malicious damage to personal property, having an open container of alcohol and having drug paraphernalia.

A report said Cpl. Jared Gilstrap and Deputy Roger Hill were called to Vaughan Road in connection with a theft that had occurred on Hidden Forest Drive. The victim said he was behind a green Jeep Cherokee that had pulled up in his yard and the driver had stolen a large, stainless steel print roller. The victim said he had followed the driver - identified as Gregory - down Pineland Road toward Highway 9. Gregory drove onto Vaughan Road, pulled off the side of the road and got stuck.

While deputies were en route, the victim told dispatchers that Gregory had unloaded the roller on the side of the road and was trying to get his vehicle free.

When deputies arrived in the 300 block of the Vaughan Road, Gregory fled into the woods. Sgt. Jimmy Johnson notified Lt. Ken Riddle, the detective on call, of the situation, and asked for the assistance of Sgt. Roy Brackins, Union County's K-9 officer.

Gilstrap ran the tag on the jeep and found it came back to Gregory and Gregory's driver's license was found in the open console of the vehicle.

An open 24-ounce Budweiser and a crack pipe were in the driver's side floor board.

The victim told Gilstrap that the Jeep had run through his mother's electric fence in an effort to get away from him.

Burglary arrest

Frederick Keith Parham, 36, of 804 Monarch Highway was charged this morning by the public safety department with first-degree burglary and assault and battery.

The victim, a 28-year-old Lakeside Drive woman, told Sgt. David Brewington that Parham came to her apartment and asked to be let in. She told him to leave. She said he became angry, kicked the door in and then came in and struck her in the right eye with his fist.

Possible scam

Thursday, an 85-year-old Meansville Road woman told public safety officers she was suspicious of two men who came to her home asking questions.

The woman told Officer Randy Canupp that two white men drove onto her driveway in a small SUV-type vehicle, which was gold or champagne in color. They knocked on the back door and when the woman opened the door, one told her it was good to see her and it had been a long time. They said they were going to open an antique craft store and were trying to get business. They asked her where her husband and children were. One had a piece of sample tile in his hand. They asked questions about her furniture and wanted to know how old it was.

Nothing was thought to be stolen from the woman at the time of the report.

Canupp advised the woman not to open the door for someone she didn't know and to call 911 when she felt she needed help.
