Union County has achieved a pair of rankings in the state it would probably rather not have.
AAA Carolinas has released a traffic report on the top five most dangerous counties in South Carolina in 2006. Union County is ranked fifth among the state's 46 counties as having the best chance of being injured in a vehicle crash, and sixth for having the most injuries per miles driven.
The report covers 12 categories based on the amount of miles driven, and includes all vehicles, motorcycles and tractor trailers.
In other categories the county is ranked as follows:
Crashes: 500 reported. Ranked 19th.
Fatal crashes: five fatalities. Ranked 25th.
Number of fatalities: five fatalities. Ranked 26th.
Injury crashes: 202 crashes. Ranked fifth.
Number of injuries: 335 injuries. Ranked sixth.
Property damage only: 293 crashes. Ranked 22nd.
Motorcycles
Fatalities: none; vehicle fatalities, all vehicles, five. Ranked 30th.
Injuries: eight; injuries all vehicles, 202. Ranked 27th.
Crashes, nine; all vehicles, 500. Ranked 20th.
Heavy trucks
Fatal crashes: none; all vehicles, five. Ranked 30th.
Injuries: eight; all vehicles, 202. Ranking 24th.
Crashes: 23; all crashes, 500. Ranked 25th.
The neighboring counties of Fairfield, Chester, Newberry and Cherokee are listed as the state's safest counties per miles driven.
Fairfield and Chester are listed second and fourth respectively as being the safest counties in all crashes, while Fairfield, Newberry and Cherokee, are second, third, and fourth in the safest in fatal crashes listing.
