JONESVILLE - Mayor Reba Vinson will be challenged for re-election in Jonesville's April 8 municipal election.

Mrs. Vinson will be opposed in her bid for a second term by councilman Ernest Moore. Mrs. Vinson won her first term in office in 2006 when she defeated incumbent Dean Alexander, becoming the town's first woman mayor.

Moore was also elected to his first term on council in 2006 and as the top vote-getter among council candidates became mayor pro tem. If he wins in April, Moore will be the town's first black mayor.

Five candidates have filed to run for the four seats on town council.

Incumbents Steve Thompson and Danny Gregory are seeking their second terms in office while John Ray Fowler is seeking his fourth term. Rounding out the ballot is newcomer Donna Simmons and former council member Ann Queen.

Two seats on the town's three-member water commission will also be on the ballot even though no one has filed to run. Commissioner William West declined to seek re-election and the other seat was vacant. The seats will be filled via write-in votes.

Filing for the April 8 election closed at noon Jan. 28.
