A Union woman died Sunday afternoon after a small tree struck her car windshield and she crashed into a utility pole.
Clara Morgan, 81, of 602 East Main St. died in Wallace Thomson Hospital shortly after the 2 p.m. wreck, which occurred on Lakeside Drive. Mrs. Morgan was the mother of Union Mayor Bruce Morgan.
Union County Coroner William Holcombe said an autopsy will be conducted today on Mrs. Morgan's body at Newberry County Memorial Hospital to determine if she died from injuries received in the wreck or another medical problem.
Mrs. Morgan's sister, Hazel Feagan, 86, of Columbus, N.C., was a passenger in Mrs. Morgan's 1995 Buick and received minor injuries in the wreck, Chief Sam White of the Union Public Safety Department said.
The two women had left a dinner at Lakeside Drive Church of Christ and were headed back to Mrs. Morgan's home when the accident occurred, Holcombe said.
A report filed by Cpl. Scott Coffer said Mrs. Morgan was traveling south on Lakeside Drive when the tree fell from an embankment and landed on the car. Mrs. Morgan then lost control of the car and it struck the pole.
Mrs. Morgan owned and operated a clothing alterations shop and had been involved in family business ventures in past years.
