Union County's junior varsity volleyball team defeated Greer 2-1 on Tuesday.

UCHS JV won 19-25, 25-14, 15-11.

Brooke Rollins had five aces and six kills. Brooke Kelley had eight assists and an ace. Megan Russell had a kill. Karley Ford had two kills.

“They worked together, were determined to win and showed a lot of heart,” said varsity coach Yoneko Allen.

UCHS (5-9) finishes its season at Clinton on Tuesday.

UCHS VARSITY VOLLEYBALL

Greer defeated Union County's varsity volleyball team 3-2 on Tuesday.

Greer won 20-25, 23-25, 25-8, 25-23, 15-11.

“The girls didn't show they wanted to win,” said Allen. “I'm disappointed with the overall team effort. We're still learning how to win and play through adversity.”

Sonni McFarland was out most of the game with broken ribs, but showed a gutsy performance at the end with two kills and “a will to win,” Allen said.

Taylor Baker had four digs, two assists, an ace and served well on senior night.

“She gave a great effort, probably her best game,” said Allen.

Britni Ward had four kills and two digs. Jessica Hall had three digs, three blocks, three aces and four kills.

UCHS (6-11, 2-11) finishes its season at Clinton on Thursday.

WHITMIRE TENNIS

LANDRUM - Whitmire's girls' tennis team defeated Landrum 6-1 on Tuesday.

In singles play, No. 1 Meghan Pitts (L) defeated Kelcie Weaver 6-4, 6-3; No. 2 Jennifer Nobles (W) d. Julia Grace 6-3, 6-3; No. 3 Faith Plemmons (W) d. Jennifer Waddle 6-0, 6-0; No. 4 Jenna Baker (W) d. Chelsey Grummel 6-0, 6-3; and No. 5 Betsy Long (W) d. Laura Riddle 6-4, 6-2.

In doubles play, No. 1 Weaver and Nobles (W) d. Pitts and Grace 8-3; No. 2 Lynlee Thompson and Deanna Willard (W) d. Valerie Wiley and Sara Morgan 6-0, 6-1.

Whitmire (8-6, 3-3) clinched second in its region with the win. Landrum finishes 8-4 overall, 2-4 in the region.

“Getting second place in the region is big for our team,” said coach Dan Wilder. “We'll get home games in the playoffs and more selections on the all-region team.”

The Wolverines should get a second seed and be at home through the playoffs. Brackets will be set Monday and the playoffs will begin on Thursday, Oct. 25.
