Whitmire downs Union County

Whitmire's girls' tennis team defeated Union County 5-2 on Tuesday at Union County High School.

“I have to give it to Whitmire,” said UCHS coach Kelly Jenkins. “They're a good team. Their girls wanted the win more than we did.”

In singles play, No. 1 Kelcie Weaver (W) defeated Lauren Harrison 6-2, 6-3; No. 2 Jennifer Nobles (W) d. Tessa Garner 2-6, 6-4 (12-10); No. 3 Faith Plemmons (W) d. Hillary Smith 7-5, 6-3; No. 4 Abby Allen (U) d. Jenna Baker 6-4, 6-0; and No. 5 Kelsey Harris (U) d. Betsy Long 6-1, 6-0.

“At No. 2 singles, Jennifer is 8-0 (excluding the Christ Church matches),” said WHS coach Dan Wilder. “She lost the first set, but she came back strong.”

In doubles play, No. 1 Weaver and Nobles (W) d. Harrison and Harris 9-7; and No. 2 Lynlee Thompson and Deanna Willard (W) d. Cheniece Porter and Megan Fowler 6-1, 6-3.

“No. 2 doubles has won 16 straight matches (excluding the Christ Church matches),” said Wilder.

“The team played real well against Union County,” said Wilder. “We've now beaten a team in every classification - 4A, 3A, 2A, 1A.”

Whitmire (5-5) travels to Landrum on Thursday to resume Class A play. Union County (7-5) travels to Eastside today to resume Class 3A play.

UCHS VOLLEYBALL

GREER - Blue Ridge defeated Union County's varsity volleyball team 3-1 on Tuesday.

Blue Ridge won 19-25, 25-15, 25-11, 25-19.

Jessica Hall had an ace, a dig and a block; Katie Sherbert had two assists and a block; Sonni McFarland had five aces, four kills, three assists, a block and a dig; Britni Ward had an ace, four kills, a block and a dig; Meredith Walker had two kills and two blocks; Haley McCoy had two aces and three assists and played well on defense, as did Ward.

“We lacked energy and played very complacent,” said UCHS coach Yoneko Allen. “We made too many mistakes and just did not have any heart.

“We missed Brittany Gregory who was unable to play due to a death in her family. Our prayers are with her and her family.”

UCHS (5-7) hosts Eastside on Thursday.

UCHS JV VOLLEYBALL

GREER - Blue Ridge defeated Union County's junior varsity volleyball team 2-0 on Tuesday.

Blue Ridge won 25-12, 25-20.

Megan Russell had an ace and a dig and Karley Ford had two aces and two digs. Hillary Jett had an assist and Christen England had a kill.

UCHS JV (4-7) host Eastside on Thursday.

WHITMIRE VOLLEYBALL

WHITMIRE - The Wolverines' volleyball team picked up its second win of the season on Tuesday, defeating SCSDB.

Whitmire also defeated SCSDB on Sept. 13.

WHS (2-10) hosts Greenville Tech on Thursday.

UCDS VOLLEYBALL

Blessed Hope defeated Union Christian Day School's girls' volleyball team 3-0 on Tuesday.

“We played better,” said coach Preston Bennett. “But Blessed Hope has a good team.”

The girls' team lost 3-0 to New Covenant on Friday. New Covenant is the reigning SCACS Class A state champions.

UCDS' girls and boys teams host Shield of Faith on Thursday.
