CHERAW - Earl James “Jim” Smith, Sr. 82, husband of Reeda Young Smith, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007 from complications of several illnesses including Alzheimer's.
Mr. Smith was born Dec. 28, 1924 in Buffalo, the only child of the late Talbert T. and Ruth M. Scarboro Smith. He graduated from Union High School in 1941 and Clemson University in 1950 with a degree in Textile Manufacturing. His entire life was spent in the textile industry beginning with United Merchants after high school graduation and retirement in 1996 from James Fabrics a division of Burlington, Inc. in Cheraw.
Earl had been a member of First Baptist Church since moving to Cheraw in 1972. He was a member of the Brotherhood, Berean Sunday School class, past teacher of the Belle Hurt Class, and a deacon. He was a former member and past president of Cheraw Lions Club. He was a Mason for 48 years in the Campbell Lodge 316 AF and AM in Altavista, Va.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Earl James Smith II (Melanie) of Newnan, Ga.; and three grandchildren, Jeremy Michael, Emily Anne and Spencer James Smith.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. today, Thursday, Sept. 27, 200, at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens in Cheraw by the Rev. Dick Young and the Rev. Dan Barber. The family received friends after the service at the cemetery.
