Union County High School showered its retirees with love and appreciation during a special dinner Wednesday afternoon.

UCHS hosted a 2011-2012 Retirement Dinner as a way to show gratitude to those who dedicated their careers to contributing to the school. Principal Floyd Lyles said UCHS retirees — as well as principals, assistant principals and others who have made an impact on his career — were invited to the dinner.

Lyles said such dinners were a special part of the school year while he was principal at Jonesville Elementary/Middle School, and he thought it would be a nice addition to UCHS calendar.

After guests were seated, they were treated to a surprise Christmas concert performed by the UCHS Concert Choir and Chorus.

“The chorus jumped right in to help,” Lyles said. “This group was so great at our Christmas program. It was like, ‘Wow! What a great way to end the semester!’”

Lyles said some were doubtful about whether retirees would be interested in coming back to UCHS for the occasion, but when they were invited, most said they were excited about the idea. He mentioned that current UCHS employees were also happy to participate in the event. He said assistant principal Jenelle Gilliam made honorary flyers for the event, and the office and cafeteria staff also pitched in to make the event successful.

“It was special for everyone here as well — to see the retirees come back and to be a part of making this happen,” Lyles said.

The honorary event flyer listed the following as recent UCHS retirees:

  • Brenda Bogan
  • Kathy Campbell
  • Linda Cassells
  • Kaye Corbett
  • Donna Cudd
  • Paul Davis
  • Ed Farr
  • Cheryl George
  • Debbie Green
  • Jack Kelly
  • Donnis Knox
  • Olin Lee
  • David Maness
  • Sissy Matthews
  • Tim Mitchell
  • Billy Jack Moore
  • Janice Parks
  • Burma Poteat
  • Benjamin “Sam” Powell
  • Kathy Robinson
  • Doris Russell
  • Buddy Wilkes
  • Jane Wilkes

The following were listed as special guests:

  • Mike Cassells
  • David Eubanks
  • Dale Goff
  • Susanne Gunter
  • Linda Kelly
  • Catherine Moore

The flyer also expressed special thanks to school board members Kim Bailey, Manning Jeter and Betty Joann McMorris.

“Although we had some unfortunate things happen, we really had a great semester,” Lyles said. “This was the best way to end — on a good note — showing appreciation for those who came before us.”

Several inspirational quotes regarding education were also included in the flyer:

“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” — William A. Ward

“We think of the effective teachers we have had over the years with a sense of recognition, but those who have touched our humanity we remember with a deep sense of gratitude.” — Anonymous student

“It is not what is poured into a student that counts but what is planted.” — Linda Conway

The final quote was one directly from those at Union County High School:

“May you continue to be blessed … you will forever be a part of the Union County High School family! We love you!”
