Fairview Baptist will host two Upward flag football games on Saturday, Oct 22, at 10 a.m.

The first will be kids 4-7 and the second will be 8-11 years old.

Over the summer, several members of Fairview Baptist got together and went to training for Upward Soccer which will begin in the spring and then decided to bring football and cheerleading to Union County as well.

More than just sports, Upward is geared toward reaching out to the community.

“We hope that through Upward, at least one person, if not every single person, child, coach, etc. will come to know Christ and grow in their walk with God” said Program Director, Andrew Kingsmore. Kingsmore coaches the football portion, along with Heath Gregory, Charles West and Glenn Howard.

Kingsmore’s wife, Katie, and Destiny Howard are over the cheerleaders.

Each week, the teams learn a new Bible verse and talk about what that verse means.

“We implement games and activities into the Bible lessons,” said Katie. “So far this year we have covered gratitude, forgiveness, faithfulness, and joy. This week, we will be covering the gospel.”

Katie, who was a high school cheerleader, has been working with the girls on cheers, dance, building and even some tumbling.

“I love sports and I believe there is no better way to reach our community,” said Katie. “I never knew how I would use my talents for God, until now.”

Andrew said this has been a learning experience, as it is the first year the church has offered Upward Football.

“Our main thing is teach about God, the second thing is to teach football basics,” said Andrew. “We reiterate to the kids that they are each special. Not all are meant to be a quarterback or a wide receiver, but each child is just as important as the next to us and to God.”

Katie said the church is working on getting a float together for the Christmas parade and then next up will be Upward Soccer in the spring.

“We look forward, with great anticipation, to what God is going to do with this program here at Fairview,” Katie said, “It is such a blessing to have a church family wrap you in their arms and remember you in their prayers each night as you prepare to come before the children each week to be examples of Christ for them.”

The teams have been practicing for a few weeks now and Andrew said he loves it.

“When I left our second practice I was just so excited about what we’re doing that when I got home I had to run five laps around the house just to calm myself down.” laughed Andrew, adding, “All God asks is that we try. And that’s what we’re doing out here. We’re trying to bring people to Christ and have fun doing it.”
