The TomCats travel ball baseball team won the 2nd Annual 18 and under 65 Roses Tournament in Union this weekend, defeating the Union County Hornets 8-2 in the championship game.
The TomCats are based out of Gaffney and have players from Chesnee, Gaffney, Chester, Campobello, Forrest City N.C., and Union County.
Union County players include Dustin West, Kennedy Beatty, Will Palmer and Khadarius Dean.
Coaches are Ernie West of Union County and Danny Hammett of Chesnee.
In the championship game, Dustin West had three hits to lead the way for the TomCats. Tyler Ledbetter, Parker Babcock, and Kennedy Beaty had two hits each. Will Palmer, Jonathon Lewis and Bronson Murabito each contributed a hit.
Lewis came in to throw half an inning of relief in the fifth to close the game, while starting pitcher Babcock picked up the win fanning six batters.
Coach West says the team doesn’t know how good they really are.
“They just keep playing and having fun,” said West. “They will be a strong team in the spring and will play in some showcase tournaments to adjust the bar to their success.”
The TomCats’ next tournament is in two weeks at the Timken Sports Complex.
