CHERAW — The Nationals will return to Union after four games played in the State Tournament in Cheraw.

“Although we didn’t make it as far as we wanted to, the players fought hard throughout the tournament.” said Coach Mitch Sinclair. “I am proud of the effort that each player gave throughout tournament play.

Shi Smith and Ty Washington each pitched three strong innings for the Nationals in the 6-4 elimination contest versus Laurens.

Union scored twice in the second inning and twice in the third. After three innings of play, the Nationals were ahead 4-3. However, the big blow came in the fourth inning when Laurens’ Chandler Todd smacked a two-run homer for the go-ahead run. The Nationals had no answer and Laurens scored once more before putting an end to Union’s hunt for a championship.

Kannon Small led the hitting with a double, followed by Jonathon Wages and Dee Brannon who each contributed a hit.

Sinclair said that he and assistant coaches, Ed Wages and Terry Davis, would like to thank everyone who supported the team through donations, prayer and driving to the games to support the Nationals.

“We would also like to thank our chaperones and parents who traveled with us to the tournament and helped take care of our players.” said Sinclair. “We have a great group of boys and parents who truly enjoyed this experience together.”
