Union County’s softball has done it again.

Another Region III-AAA championship banner will be hung in the high school’s gym because the Lady Jackets sealed the region title Monday with a 17-0 win over Greer.

The Lady Jackets are determined to surpass last year’s success with another a run in the AAA state playoffs but this year they expect an improved performance.

It came on senior night at Timken Sports Complex and three Lady Jackets felt the night’s emotions. Seniors Kelsey Harris, Sade Gibson and Megan Russell were nothing but smiles following the Jackets win.

“It feels great,” Harris, Gibson and Russel said simultaneously following the Jackets second win of Monday’s doubleheader vs. Greer.

“To win the region is great and to get it on senior night is even better,” the three seniors each said.

The Jackets stormed out on the field in the second game and rode the entire five-inning contest to a victory.

Union County shutout Greer in the top of the first inning and Harris led off the bottom frame with an infield single. Abby Allen’s singled to left field putting Jackets on base. Clean-up hitter Logan Wade singled and the bases were loaded for catcher Brooke Kelly. Kelly cleared the bases with a 3-RBI double giving Union County a 3-0 advantage with one out. The Lady Jackets left two runners on base after Gibson earned a base on balls and courtesy runner CeCe Morman was thrown out taking trying to advance.

Despite the runner’s mishap, Union County pitcher Tiffany Vaughn used momentum to shutout Greer for a second-consecutive inning.

Russell — who has missed several games with an injury — stepped into the batter’s box and smashed a second-inning, leadoff single to centerfield. Harris drew a base on balls and Andrea Eison double driving in the two seniors to give the Jackets a 5-0 lead. Eison would add to the Jackets lead Allen took ball four and Eison instinctly dashed towards home plate as Allen rounded first base.

Vaughn served Greer the same story as she shutout the visiting Jackets in the third inning and securing the Jackets 8-0 lead.

Tanijah Hunter led off the third frame with a single and later would give the Lady Jackets their final score when Russell was caught in a pickle.

Union County improves toa 17-3 overall record and sustains a perfect, 7-0 region record.
