What Hollywood has done is tried to make the “dark side” attractive. They’ve taken these good-looking, popular actors that appeal to the younger generation, painted them pale, given them bright colored contact lenses, scripted a love story, and lured millions of young and old alike. Now we have young people who are trying to look like these “vampires.” They’ll even go so far as to have cosmetic dentistry to give them the blood sucking sharp fangs. Considering the recent obsession of death and vampires, I would like to draw a few comparisons and share them with you.
Vampires are immortal creatures. Blood is their life source. They prey on their victims in the dark. They claim that with this immortality they look at things in a different way, and most importantly they have special powers. This new phenomenon is a real danger! It is turning so many young people away from the gospel of Jesus Christ. You see, while their message is placing people in depths of darkness and a hopeless death, Christianity leads people into the glorious light, setting them free from this dominion of darkness and giving them hope in eternal life.
As a Christian, I am an eternal being although my body of flesh will one day die but without any sting. I will live forever in Heaven. I’ve also depended on blood as my life source. But this isn’t just anyone’s blood or even my own, but it is the blood of Jesus. His is as of a lamb without spot or blemish; that shed his own blood to satisfy our sin debt and reconcile us to God the Father.
Our “vampire friends” prey on their victims in the darkness, and I too have prayed in the dark. However, unlike them, my praying is not on victims. We have all walked through tough times in life and it seemed as if the sun wouldn’t shine again. But when we pray and get in touch with God, those dark times seem to fade away and the sun shines again. After being saved, I also look at things in a different light. I have a love for those who I once hated. I pray for my enemies because now I am a new creature in Christ.
Finally, I have to confess that I don’t have any special powers but there is one living inside me, the very spirit of God, who is all-powerful. As a matter of fact, He speaks and the winds obey. He speaks and the mountains move. He speaks and the demons quake in fear. He speaks and the dumb can speak, the deaf can hear, the blind can see, and the dead rises. He is the King of all Kings, the Lord of Lords. His name is exalted above all. At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus is Lord to the glory of God the Father.
I want to leave you with this simple thought. No matter how dark it gets, it only takes a little light to lead the way. Go into a room, close the blinds, shut the door, and get it so dark you can’t see your hand in front of your face. Then strike a match and see what happens. In John 9:5 Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.” Lets all let our light shine in these dark days.
