March Madness arrived in Union County last weekend and it had nothing to do with college basketball or office brackets.

However, it did draw a large number of fans and made Union the place to be.

Dozens of the state’s best teams traveled to Timken Sports Complex to compete in preseason baseball and softball tournaments to kick off their 2011 campaigns. Host Union County schools had a strong representation during the three days of spirited action.

Sims, Lockhart, Jonesville and Union County’s JV teams participated in the preseason tournaments which segued into their respective regular seasons which start this week.

Below are submitted results from the 2011 Union County middle school preseason baseball tournament. Middle school softball and JV baseball scores will be published as they become available.

Thursday’s results:

Northwestern 18, Lockart 0

Sims 13, Mabry 2

Spartanburg 12, Jonesville 2

Woodruff 8, Landrum 1

Friday’s results:

Northwestern 8, Sims 4

Woodruff 17, Spartanburg 3

Mabry 12, Lockhart 7

Saturday’s results:

Sims 9, Spartanburg 4 (consolation game)

Local teams spring into 2011 regular season this week

UCHS varsity baseball:

UCHS hosts Chester at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Timken Sports Complex.

UCHS varsity softball:

UCHS opens their 2011 season on the road vs. Woodruff on today at 7 p.m.

UCHS varsity boys soccer:

Union County will face Newberry in a 7:30 p.m. contest today.

UCHS varsity girls soccer:

Lady Yellow Jackets travel to Newberry for a 5:30 p.m. contest on today.

UCHS varsity boys/girls track:

UCHS at York on Thursday at 5 p.m.

UCHS varsity boys tennis:

Union County faces Byrnes on the road today at 5 p.m.

UCHS JV softball:

UCHS travels to Woodruff for their first regular-season game on today at 5 p.m.

UCHS JV baseball:

UCHS hosts Chester at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Timken Sports Complex.

Middle school baseball action:

Lockhart at home Monday vs. Spartanburg Christian at 5 p.m. Sims travels to Lockhart on Tuesday for a 4:30 p.m. contest. Jonesville hits the road to take on Spartanburg Christian at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday

Middle school softball action:

Dorman hosts two Union County schools Thursday. Jonesville will take on the Lady Cavs at 5 p.m., followed by Sims vs. Dorman at 7:30 p.m. Lockhart hosts JEMS on Tuesday, March 15 at LMS Dixie Youth Park. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
