Marijuana Possession, DUS
The weather played a role in a chase that ended with a Union man facing traffic and drug charges.
Preston Recardo Beaty, 23, 114 Sunset Lane, Union, is charged by the public safety department with driving under suspension fifth offense and possession of marijuana other than first offense.
The incident report states officers were responding to a call about reckless driving of four-wheelers on Lakeview Heights when they saw Beaty driving a red Pontiac Grand Am. The officers knew Beaty was driving with a suspended license and so they turned onto Toluca Street just as Beaty’s car turned on to Stutts Avenue. The officers then turned off onto Richard Street where they saw Beaty turn onto there as well.
When they got to the intersecton of Richard and East Main streets they saw Beaty heading toward Arthur Boulevard. Beaty then turned onto Arthur Boulevard and then back onto Stutts Avenue, heading back in the same direction he just came from. The officers continued to follow Beaty trying to get close enough to make a traffic stop, but because of the snow they had to proceed with caution. Nevertheless, the report states they were getting closer with each turn.
Officers were able to stay behind Beaty and saw him turn from Stutts Avenue onto Lakeview Heights. Beaty then turned left onto Davis Street and then onto Mapale Street. Due to road conditions, the officers were able to get close enough to make a traffic stop at the top of the hill on Maple Street. Before they could activate their blue lights, however, the report states Beaty got out of his car, looked at one of the officers then fled on foot.
Following a brief chase, officers were able to apprehend Beaty in a yard covered with snow on Lakeview Heights. Beaty was then transported by a third officer to jail for driving with a suspended license. A license check at the jail confirmed his license was suspended and this was his fifth offense.
Other law enforcement personnel from both public safety and the sheriff’s office, including Sheriff David Taylor, assisted at the scene.
The report states Beaty said he dropped his phone in the yard where he was apprehended. Officers went back to look for it and found the cell phone and a small plastic bag containing a green leafy substance thought to be marijuana. Beaty was subsequently charged with possession of marijuana other than first offense.
