PROSPERITY — Sharp shooting helps in old western movies and on the court.

If Brett Smith of Union County was a gunslinger he would be the most feared and revered man in town.

Smith nailed six three-pointers and scored 29 points in the Yellow Jackets 74-61 win Tuesday at Mid-Carolina in non-region boys basketball action.

Mid-Carolina played UCHS close during the first and second quarters and tied the game at 16-16 early in the second frame. The Yellow Jackets took the lead from that point and would not relinquish it as they went into the half with a 29-22 lead.

Smith was the only Jacket to score on double-digits vs. Mid-Carolina.

Union County’s TJ Jeter scored nine points and was 3-of-3 from the free throw line. Kalay Jones hit two three-pointers and dropped in eight points for the Jackets.

The Yellow Jackets host defending 4A state champions Gaffney Indians on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Gaffney defeated Union County 111-55 in their December contest this season.

Lady Jackets win big on the road

PROSPERITY — Union County’s girls basketball team won Tuesday’s game 52-36 vs. Mid-Carolina.

The Lady Jackets return to action Friday when they host Gaffney at 6 p.m.

Union County looks to get a win vs. their 4A opponent after losing on the road in overtime at Gaffney in a December matchup.

There was no additional game information available at Wednesday’s press time, but be sure to check out the Times Web site for more information on Tuesday’s game.
