Several races hightlight the 2010 midterm elections

Local, state and federal offices and four proposed amendments to the South Carolina constitution will be on the Nov. 2 ballot in Union County.

Federal

US Senate

Incumbent Republican US Sen. Jim DeMint’s reelection bid is being challenged by Democrat Alvin M. Greene and Tom Clements of the Green Party.

Fourth District

The race for the Fourth Congressional District is a four-way battle with Republican Trey Gowdy, Democrat Paul Corden, Green Party candidate C. Faye Walters and Constitution Party candidate Dave Edwards vying for the seat.

State

Nine statewide offices are on the ballot but only seven are contested. Republicans Curtis Loftis and Bob Livingston are unopposed in their respective bids for the offices of Treasurer and Adjutant General.

Governor

In the race for Governor, Republican Nikki R. Haley’s bid to beome South Carolina’s first female chief executive is opposed by Democrat Vincent A. Sheheen and Morgan Bruce Reeves, candidate of both the Green and United Citizens parties.

Lieutenant Governor

The race for Lieutenant Governor pits Republican Ken Ard against Democrat Ashley Cooper.

Secretary of State

Incumbent Republican Mark Hammond’s bid for another term as Secretary of State is opposed by Democrat Marjorie L. Johnson.

Attorney General

The race for Attorney General is a three-way battle between Republican Alan Wilson, Democrat Matthew Richardson and the Green Party’s Leslie Minerd.

Comptroller General

Incumbent Republican Richard A. Eckstrom’s bid for another term as Comptroller General is opposed by Democrat Robert Barber.

State Superintendent Of Education

The most crowded statewide race is for State Superintendent of Education with Republican Mick Zais, Democrat Frank Holleman, the Green Party’s Doretha A. Bull and Independence Party candidate Tony Fayyazi running for the office.

Commissioner Of Agriculture

Republican Hugh Weathers and Democrat Tom E. Elliott are vying to become the state’s next Commissioner of Agriculture.

SC House District 42

The only race for the state legislature on the ballot is for SC House District 42 where incumbent Democratic Rep. Mike Anthony’s bid for reelection is being challenged by Republican Randall English.

County

Nine countywide offices are on the ballot but only three of them are contested. Unopposed for reelection are incumbents Probate Judge Donna Cudd, Coroner William E. Holcombe, Auditor Brad Valentine and Treasurer Dianne Wilkins, all of whom are Democrats.

Supervisor

Incumbent Democrat Tommy Sinclair’s bid for election to a full term as Supervisor is opposed by Republican Brooks Carwile.

Council District One

Incumbent Democrat Joan Little’s bid for reelection to the Union County Council District One seat is opposed by Republican David Gossett.

Council District Four

Republican Don Hyder and Democrat Ben Ivey are squaring off for the Union County Council District Four seat.

Municipal

The City of Union for three seats on Union City Council and the Town of Carlisle for one seat on the Carlisle Town Council. The municipal races are all non-partisan.

Union

In Council District 1, incumbent Tommie L. Hill is opposed for reelection by Jackie W. Earls Jr.

In Council District 2, incumbent Robert Earl Garner is unopposed for reelection.

In Council District 5, incumbent Orangelow Miller Ruff is opposed for reelection by David “Tubo” Owens.

Carlisle

In Carlisle, John Glenn is the only candidate for the seat on the ballot.

School Board

Five seats on the non-partisan Union County Board of School Trustees are on the ballot but only two are contested. Board members Kim A. Bailey, Jane H. Hammett and Wanda R. All are unopposed for reelection in Districts 3, 4 and 8.

District 4

In District 4, incumbent Donna Sanders is being challenged by Robert W. Hill and Buck Peay.

District 9

In District 9, Calandra Barrett is squaring off against Jane R. Wilkes.

Nonpartisan

Thirteen seats on six non-partisan boards and commissions are also on the ballot but there are only 12 candidates running for them.

Jonesville Fire District Commission

Terry Holmes, Cam Robinson and Dean Robinson are seeking three seats on the Jonesville Fire District Commission.

Monarch Fire Board

Claude “Tommy” Hart Jr. is seeking one of two seats on the Monarch Fire Board. The other seat will be decided with write-in votes.

Santuc Fire Board — Four-Year Terms

Frank Boughman and Eddie Hines are seeking two seats on the Santuc Fire Board.

Santuc Fire Board — Two-Year Terms

John D. Cheek Jr. and Tracey Hardin are seeking two seats on the Satuc Fire Board.

Browns Creek Watershed District

Evelyn Alman and Mike Scales are seeking two seats on the Browns Creek Watershed District.

Soil And Water District Commission

Stonie Keith and Jimmie Smith are running for two seats on the Soil and Water District Commission.
