Childers is new First Steps executive director

UNION — Union County First Steps has a new executive director.In a statement released by First Steps earlier this week, it was announced that the Union County First Steps Board of Directors had hired Catherine McManus Childers as Executive Director, replacing Beth Thompson, who resigned from the position in August.The announcement states that Childers most recently has worked as Executive Director of the Union County Health Care Foundation and as Volunteer Coordinator for Wallace Thomson Hospital. It further states that, “with over a decade of experience, Ms. Childers led her organization in establishing several annual fund raising events and directed the work of over 40 volunteers.”

I have mentioned DISCUS in this blog several times, but today I want to highlight a resource that has been given additional value by new legislation.It was recently announced that this will be the first year in which the High School Assessment Program standardized test will not be given. Instead, 11th graders will take two other assessments — a college and career assessment (a specific test has not been determined) and WorkKeys, a test measuring essential workforce skills.

Event raises $1,700 for injured firefighter

JONESVILLE — A fundraiser for a firefighter with the Jonesville Fire Department severely burned in an accident earlier this year raised approximately $1,700 on Saturday.On Aug. 6, DJ Long was working on a tractor when he noticed water leaking from the freeze plug on the tractor’s engine.
