More Watercolor 101

Local artist, Nanette Jenkins, visited Monarch Elementary School April 18 to work with fourth and fifth grade GT art students. She demonstrated many techniques and “secrets” involved in creating a watercolor painting. Ms. Jenkins shared several of her beautiful paintings and stories of studying art abroad with the young artists. The students were captivated by her talent and enthusiasm for the watercolor process. Artists not only were able to “dabble” in the medium, they ended the workshop with their very own watercolor masterpiece!

On Saturday, April 29, the Union Carvers Club presented a hand-carved bowl and two ladles to the Union County Historical Society during the Living History Event IV at the Cross Keys Plantation. The bowl was carved by members of the club from a burl on a felled walnut tree at the plantation. Pictured on the front row are David Turner, Buddy Smith, Ola Jean Kelly and Bannie Kennedy. On the second row are Dick Stalnaker, Walter Garner and Butch Starnes. Turner, Kennedy, Stalnaker, Garner and Starnes are members of the club. Earth Day garden

Foster Park Elementary School celebrated Earth Day by cultivating the garden site and planting the school’s spring vegetable garden. Under the guidance of Jackie Johnson (garden coordinator) and Susan Adams (custodian), the students planted corn, green beans, squash, okra, and white potatoes. Mrs. Vinson’s class, with the help of assistants, planted tomato plants. The students enjoy watching the plants grow and eventually, harvesting the vegetables.
