UNION — USC Union will welcome Dr. Curtis R. Rogers as the keynote speaker for the university’s Commencement Exercises. They will be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 4, in the Truluck Activity Center.
Dr. Rogers is the director of communications for the South Carolina State Library and coordinates the South Carolina Center for the Book. After attending USC Union in 1986, he transferred to USC’s Columbia campus where he received a Bachelor of Arts in geography in 1990, a Master of Library and Information Science in 1991, and later, a Doctor of Education in curriculum and instruction in 2002.
Dr. Rogers began his library career shelving children’s books at the Union Carnegie Library. After graduation from library school, he worked at the Charleston County Public Library and has taught courses at USC’s School of Library and Information Science. He has devoted the majority of his career at the South Carolina State Library, working as a reference librarian, webmaster, continuing education coordinator, director of statewide library services and library development and interim director.
Dr. Rogers currently coordinates the library’s social media program and for the past five years has conducted a national library survey on library use of social media for public relations. He has presented the survey findings in many settings, including the 2009 German Library Association Conference in Erfurt, Germany, and at the State and University Library of Hamburg, Germany.
In 2001, he completed the University of the Azores summer study course in Azorean Portuguese culture and language and in 2004 completed the certified public manager credential. In 2008, he was president of the South Carolina Library Association.
Dr. Rogers currently serves on the governing board of the South Carolina Academy of Authors and the South Carolina Humanities Council’s advisory board of the South Carolina Book Festival.
