UNION — Union County rolled to a convincing 49-32 Region III-AAA win over Chapman despite the fact that its leading scorer Kristin Giles was held to eight points. Behind the production of post player CeeCee Moorman the Jackets took control of the first half, outscoring the Panthers 25-16.
“Offensively we were cold tonight,” said Union County Head Coach Angela Burke. “CeeCee really stepped up for us and made the shots that we had to have.
Union County took an 11-point lead midway through the third quarter and held Chapman scoreless for the first five minutes of the final frame.
“Shaulda (Stevens) really did a good job defensively with Chapman’s point guard and keeping her under her averages,” said Burke.
Moorman finished the game with 22 points and Cierra Mitchell contributed 11 points.
In boys action:
Champan’s suffocating defense was too much for Union County who suffered its sixth straight region loss on Tuesday, 69-34.
The Yellow Jackets trailed by just six points at the end of the first period before turnovers began piling up.
“We quit doing what had been working in the first quarter,” said Union County Head Coach Will Hickson. “We rushed some things and they’re a good basketball team.
Keiston Smith hit a free throw to pull the Jackets to within five points in the second quarter before the Panthers went on a 20-2 run.
Down 39-11, Union County opened the third quarter with back to back three-pointers from T.J. Foster and Jordan Spencer but Chapman scored the next three baskets to fight off the Jackets rally.
Chapman’s Deebo Samuel scored 12 points in the second half including a pair of 3-pointers that pushed the Panthers’ lead past 20. He finished the night with 17 points.
Union County was led by Foster with nine points. Jared Booker and Quan Hardy netted six apiece.
