Thursday, Jan. 31

• Dixie Youth Baseball meets at 6 p.m. in the Arcade at The Timken Sports Complex. This meeting is for officers, board members, 2012 coaches from Minors and Majors Divisions, and anyone who would like to coach with the new Machine Pitch League (ages 6-8) or in the Minors League. A meeting for Dixie Boys coaches will be held at a later date.

Monday, Feb. 4

• The Union County First Steps Partnership board holds its annual meeting at 5:30 p.m. at the Union County Advanced Technology Center, 1401 Furman L. Fendley Highway in Union. The public is invited to attend. The meeting agenda includes a vote on nominees for board membership. The list of nominees is on display at the Union County First Steps office, 120 Lakeside Drive, Union. Anyone wishing to attend that requires special assistance due to a disability is encouraged to contact Beth Thompson at (864) 429-1748, ext. 306 prior to the meeting.

• Union County Council holds a workshop at 5:15 p.m. in the Conference Room on the second floor of the County Annex Building to discuss Council’s position on issues to be discussed at a joint meeting between the Union County Council and the School Board. The public is invited to attend.

Tuesday, Feb. 5

• The Union County Beekeepers Association meets at 7 p.m. at Clemson Extension. All interested in beekeeping are invited to attend. A beginning beekeeping class starts Feb. 12. Call Jim Stevens at 426-4344 or Bart Woodard at 429-1388 for more information.

• Jonesville Town Council meets at 5:30 p.m. in the Jonesville Municipal Complex.

Thursday, Feb. 7

• Carlisle Town Hall, 3911 Fishdam Ave. in Carlisle, hosts free tax preparation services by USC Union from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Basic returns only will be prepared for persons with a total 2012 income of no more than $51,000. Saturday, Feb. 9

• The 15th annual Father/Daughter Valentine Dance sponsored by the Union County Recreation Department is held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Recreation Department Gymnasium, 111 Thomas St. in Union. Tickets can be bought before Feb. 1 at the Union County Recreation Department. The price is $30 per couple and $5 for each additional child and includes a portrait of father and daughter, a corsage and music by DJ Big. Thursday, Feb. 28

• Union County School Math, Science ad Technology Night is held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. All schools will display student work in math, science and technology. Local industry will highlight technical skills needed for their workforce. Other industry will display advances in technology in their fields. Union County High School Guidance will offer support in college applications and career guidance. Camp information will be available for students.

• The Bogansville UMC Relay For Life team holds its second annual Race With The Leprechauns For A Cure 5K/10K at the West Springs School House, Ball Field Road in Pauline. Ongoing events

“Painting with Coffee” meets from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Tuesday at the Union County Arts Council’s Gallery on Main Street in Union. Any artist working in any medium can attend this informal group of like-minded artists. Call UCAC at 864-429-2817 for more information.

• The Union County Recreation Department is accepting new students for its After-School Program. Registration fee and weekly fees charged. Students ages 5-12 years old are picked up from Foster Park, Monarch and Buffalo Elementary, and Sims Middle School. Union County Council holds its regular monthly meeting the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Grand Jury Room of the Union County Courthouse. The dates for the 2013 meetings are Feb. 12, March 12, April 9, May 14, June 11, July 9, Aug. 13, Sept. 10, Oct. 8, Nov. 12 and Dec. 10.

• The Austin Rehab Relay For Life team is raising money through three ongoing fundraisers: selling cookbooks for $10, selling short-sleeved T-shirts for $12 and long-sleeved T-shirts for $15, and $1 raffle tickets for a three-month fitness. The raffle drawing will be held May 13 at the center. For information contact Mandy at 429-3003.

• The Covenant Baptist Church Relay For Life Team holds a Sunday meal at the church as an ongoing fundraiser. For information contact Ponnee at 427-3102.

• The Union County Beekeepers Association offers a seven-week certified beekeeping class from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Tuesday. Registration is required. Four Quartets from the Palmetto Statesmen Barbershop Chorus deliver singing Valentines for $45 on Feb. 13 and Feb. 14. Call (864) 576-3734 to schedule one. Special arrangements can be made to sing more songs and/or to a larger group such as a group of employees.

Union County is sponsoring the Meansville Riley Water Company's application for a $350,000 grant through the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority. The grant would enable the company to install approximately 31,000 linear feet of new water main on eight different roadways and improve water quality. If requested to do so, should the county sponsor more such grant applications by other local water companies?
