UNION — Three Union County High School football players were recognized on Sunday night at the annual High School Sports Report Fall Sports Awards Banquet.

Senior Shrine Bowl quarterback Keiston Smith was named the 2012 Statewide Player of the Year while senior wide-receiver Victor Ruth and senior defensive end Jamarcus Henderson were selected to the Class AAA All-State team. Smith finished the 2012 season with 4,604 passing yards and 42 touchdowns while rushing for 1,156 yards and 21 touchdowns. He led the Yellow Jackets to a state championship appearance where he threw for 264 yards and rushed for 102 more, scoring two touchdowns from the ground and two from the air.

Ruth was one of Union County’s most dangerous skill players, frequently eclipsing 100 yards in a single contest. He fininshed the season with 84 catches for 1,420 yards and 12 touchdowns.

On defense, it was Jamarcus Henderson who led the way for Union County, consistently pressuring opposing quarterbacks and forcing fumbles. Henderson had 107 tackles and 16 sacks on the season.

Region AAA-III had four other players listed on the All-State team:

• Ben Zeigler, Chapman High School

• Jamarcus Moore, Chester High School

• D.J. Jones, Woodruff High School

Union County is sponsoring the Meansville Riley Water Company's application for a $350,000 grant through the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority. The grant would enable the company to install approximately 31,000 linear feet of new water main on eight different roadways and improve water quality. If requested to do so, should the county sponsor more such grant applications by other local water companies?
