City issues permits for more than $250,000 in repairs, new construction

UNION — The City of Union Planning Department issued 59 building and other permits and business licenses in January, collecting nearly $3,500 in fees.

In its report to council for the month of January, the department reported issuing 45 permits and collecting $1,563.50 in fees on projects with a combined value of $267,180. The largest of these projects was $50,000 worth of new commercial electrical construction at the new Shoe Show store at 515 N. Duncan Bypass, Suite B. The department collected $221.50 on the permit issued for the project.

The department also issue:

• Six building permits for $150 on $22,687 worth of commercial repairs.

• One permit for $50 on a $2,000 demolition project.

• Nineteen building permits for $455 on $75,168 worth of residential repairs.

• One permit for $425 on $5,000 worth of signage at Burger King.

• One electrical permit for $15 on $1,000 worth of commercial repairs.

• Five electrical permits for $101 on $2,375 worth of residential repairs.

• Three heating/air conditioning permits for $120 on new residential projects worth $15,600.

• Two plumbing permits for $33.50 on $5,500 worth of residential repairs.

Business Licenses

The department also issued 14 business licenses in January collecting $1,803.75.

Other Projects

In January, construction continued on the Shoe Show store. Work was completed on the store in February and it opened for business on March 1.

Inspections

A total of 18 inspections were conducted by the department in January including building (six), electrical (seven), plumbing (three), and plumbing and heating (two).

Letters

The department issued two letter for nuisance and code violations in January.

Nuisances and code violations include overgrown grass, abandoned vehicles, signs and condemned structures.

Union County is sponsoring the Meansville Riley Water Company's application for a $350,000 grant through the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority.
