UNION COUNTY — Members of the Union County High School Class of 2013 officially reached a milestone as the students’ Commencement Exercise was held at Union County Stadium Friday evening.

The evening opened with remarks from UCHS Principal Floyd Lyles, who said the event was a celebration and that it was about the Class of 2013. The Invocation was given by graduating senior David Robert Beavans; the Pledge of Allegiance was led by 2013 Class President Keiston Rashad Smith; and the UCHS GT Music class sang the national anthem.

The Salutatory address was given by 2013 Salutatorian Louis Nicolo Lacsamana Mercado. Mercado joked about his first day of high school and discussed some of the highlights of his high school career, such as the excitement of Yellow Jacket sports. Mercado also mentioned teachers who inspired him — Ginger Fant, Jeanie Malone, and Tracy Petty. Mercado said those teachers made an impact by “providing a platform to reach for the stars.”

Following Mercado’s speech, Class of 2013 GT Music students Bess Lawson and Jessie Cantrell sang a duet of “For Good,” a song from the Broadway show “Wicked.”

The Valedictory address was given by 2013 Valedictorian Joseph Clark Beavans. Beavans thanked the Union County School District, board members, Superintendent Dr. Kristi Woodall, his teachers and fellow classmates. Beavans told those in attendance that Friday’s ceremony was not an end, but a beginning, and he asked his classmates what path they would choose.

“There comes a time when you must decide between what is hard and what is easy,” he said.

Beavans closed his speech by reminding his class members of their common bond.

“Even though we will go our separate ways this evening, we will always be united under the Yellow Jacket,” he said.

After the presentation of Diplomas, the UCHS GT Music class and soloist Novah Manibusan performed “I Will Remember You” in loving memory of classmates Enyasha Walls and Dequan Tyrone Jones.

Union County is sponsoring the Meansville Riley Water Company's application for a $350,000 grant through the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority. The grant would enable the company to install approximately 31,000 linear feet of new water main on eight different roadways and improve water quality. If requested to do so, should the county sponsor more such grant applications by other local water companies?
