Crime Report

The Union County Sheriff’s Office reported the following arrests:

— Sandra Lee Schworm, 72, of 201 Aberdeen Lane, Spartanburg, was charged with trespassing around 1:05 p.m. on May 3. According to the incident report, Schworm was reported loading several items into her vehicle at an address from which she was placed on trespass notice. Schworm stated she was only trying to get her property before it was rained on. She was transported to Union County Jail.

— Preston Recardo Beaty, 25, of 114 Sunset Lane, Union, was charged with failure to stop for a blue light, possession of controlled substance, driving under suspension (third or more), illegal tint, reckless driving and habitual traffic offender around 4:30 p.m. on May 4. According to the incident report, Beaty was seen driving recklessly on Pea Ridge Highway and Eisontown Road in Union. He finally stopped the vehicle, jumped out and ran into the woods. A K-9 unit responded, and officers watched for Beaty in another vehicle. They noticed he was a passenger in the vehicle of a relative — the owner of the house to which Beaty ran. Beaty was transported to Union County Jail.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office reported the following incidents:

— An employee of Hot Spot, located at 4509 Jonesville Lockhart Highway, Lockhart, reported on May 4 that a customer came into the store attempting to purchase beer and cigarettes. The clerk said the customer wanted to write a check for $20 more than the total and get $20 cash back. The check was declined twice for insufficient funds, and the customer cursed the clerk, grabbed the items, and left the store. The total value of items taken was $15.41. Officers will request a warrant for shoplifting.

— A resident of Osborne Street, Union, reported on May 5 that his house was broken into during the time he was in the hospital from May 1-5. Items missing included a 42-inch flat screen TV valued at $500 and a 22-inch LED TV valued at $180. The case was given to investigation.

The Union Public Safety Department reported the following arrest:

— Dennis Dale Willard, Jr., 25, of 3281 Buffalo West Springs Highway, Buffalo, was charged with disorderly conduct and simple possession of marijuana around 2:40 a.m. on May 4.

The Union Public Safety Department reported the following incident:

— A resident of Highland Drive, Union, reported on May 5 that her home was broken into. According to the incident report, a window was broken and pry marks were found on the front door. Items missing included a 46-inch Samsung TV and a 32-inch Toshiba TV estimated at a total value of $1,700. The case was turned over to investigations.

A Norfolk & Southern Railroad construction crew works earlier this week to install the switching system linking the railroad line that runs along S.C. 18 in the Bonham community with the spur running from the Gonvauto manufacturing facility across the road. The Gonvauto plant is scheduled to go into operation in July and the raw materials it will use will be transported by rail and then brought into the facility via the spur.

Union County is sponsoring the Meansville Riley Water Company's application for a $350,000 grant through the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority. The grant would enable the company to install approximately 31,000 linear feet of new water main on eight different roadways and improve water quality. If requested to do so, should the county sponsor more such grant applications by other local water companies?
