UNION — One person is dead and a police officer injured following an automobile accident on Sardis Road and an altercation on Hart Street late Wednesday afternoon.

Officers of the Union Public Safety Department and deputies of the Union County Sheriff’s Office were both on the incident scene along with the Southside Fire Department and Union County EMS.

Union Public Safety Director Sam White said the incident is still under investigation, but that it appears there was an automobile accident on the Sardis Road and that individuals involved in the accident then became involved in an assault on Hart Street. White said that an officer became involved and there was a scuffle involving the people from the accident who were involved in the assault. He said that the officer and one of the individuals involved in the accident and the assault were taken to Wallace Thomson Hospital.

White said that the individual involved in the accident and the assault later died. He said the officer was still in the hospital as of Thursday evening.

Given that there was a death and an officer was involved in the situation, White said that SLED has been called in to investigate. He said that anytime there is an officer involved in a situation where a death results, SLED is called in as a matter of policy.

Union County is sponsoring the Meansville Riley Water Company's application for a $350,000 grant through the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority. The grant would enable the company to install approximately 31,000 linear feet of new water main on eight different roadways and improve water quality. If requested to do so, should the county sponsor more such grant applications by other local water companies?
