JONESVILLE — A steady stream of customers helped a local church raise more than $1,000 Saturday for its mission trip to Nicaragua in June.
Twelve members of Jonesville Baptist Church will travel to Leon, Nicaragua on June 1 for a mission that will include ministering to both the physical and spiritual needs of the people of the area. Church members have been going to Nicaragua since 2008 and each time they take with them a variety of materials including school supplies, toiletry items, toys, protein foods, and Spanish-language bibles. The group distributes the items to the people of the region they visit and evangelize them following the distributions.
In addition to distributING food and other materials, church members have also been involved in the construction of houses and other buildings to serve the needs of the people of the areas they visit.
To raise funds for this year’s mission trip, Jonesville Baptist held a yard sale at its parsonage on Saturday. The sale was scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., but church member Becky Quinn said customers began arriving before then and continued coming all morning.
“We weren’t going to start until eight, but we had our first customer at twenty til seven and there hasn’t been a moment that somebody hasn’t been there,” Quinn said Saturday afternoon as customers continued to make purchases. “God is a god of provision.”
Quinn, who will be among the church members taking part in the mission, said Monday that the steady stream of customers purchased approximately 80 percent of the items for sale helping the church clear more than $1,000.
“We did great, we made $1,055,” Quinn said. “That will go a long way to helping the people down there.”
In addition to the 12 members of Jonesville Baptist Church who will be going on the mission trip, eight members of Bethlehem United Methodist Church will also be going. The church members are traveling to Nicaragua through Spartanburg-based Chosen Children Ministries which operates an orphanage and several churches in the country as well as the mission house where the members will be staying. They will stay there for a week and return to the United States on June 8.
Quinn thanked all those who helped make Saturday’s sale a success and asked for prayers for the mission and for the people of Nicaragua.
“I want to thank everyone for their support,” Quinn said. “Please keep us and the people of Nicaragua in your prayers. It’s all about God and what He does, we’re just His instruments.”
