UNION — The walls of the Union County Arts Council’s gallery are filled with photographs depicting the themes people, places and things. The exhibit is being held in conjunction with UCAC’s 2013 Photography Contest in which photographers had the chance to win cash prizes ranging from $200 to $25. The winners will be announced at an awards reception to be held at the gallery.

Judging was done by a panel of three local photographers, each specializing in a particular type of photography. John Byrum works his “day job” as an award-winning photographer for the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, but is equally at-home producing colorful landscapes from his travels throughout the western states. Union resident Lisbeth Kelly uses her talent to capture images of kids during unexpected moments and Buffalo’s Billy Liner lends his unique vision to the interpretation of mundane, everyday objects.

The show contains nearly 70 images from photographers who live and work as close as Union and as far away as the North Carolina coast.

“We have some beautiful pieces of photographic art on display,” said UCAC coordinator Jackie Senn. “Usually, our photography exhibits are very popular and this one will be no exception.”

The public is invited to attend the 2013 UCAC Photography Awards Reception and all attendees will be asked to vote for their favorite photograph. That winner will be awarded the two hundred dollar grand prize. The reception will be held May 30 from 6:30-8:30 P.M. at the UCAC gallery on Main Street in Union.

Union County is sponsoring the Meansville Riley Water Company's application for a $350,000 grant through the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority. The grant would enable the company to install approximately 31,000 linear feet of new water main on eight different roadways and improve water quality. If requested to do so, should the county sponsor more such grant applications by other local water companies?
