JONESVILLE — An accident early Friday morning at the intersection of U.S. 176 and New Hope Church Road involving four vehicles sent two people to the hospital.

L/Cpl Billy Elder of the S.C. Highway Patrol said the accident occurred at 7:20 p.m. when a 2004 Jeep struck the rear of a 2001 Honda two-door. Elder said the impact of the collision sent the Honda into a 2013 International Truck with trailer that was in the opposite lane. He said the Jeep, which was out of control after colliding with the Honda, also struck the rear of a 2002 Mercury four-door.

Elder said the driver of the Jeep, Ginalee Carter, 26, 2745 Lockhart Highway, Union, and the driver of the Honda, Ruth Martin, 43, 130 Woodrow St., Union, were transported to Wallace Thomson Hospital. He said the driver of the International Truck, Donald Martin, 46, 216 Merriman Avenue, Greenwood, and the driver of the Mercury, Takenya Jeter, 30, 112 Lawrence St., Carlisle, did not go to the hospital.

At the time of the collision, Elder said the Honda, the International Truck, and the Mercury were all stopped in their respective lanes. He said the collision was the result of the Jeep traveling too fast and its driver will be charged by the SCHP with driving too fast for conditions.

The intersection is near Jonesville Elementary/Middle School, 350 New Hope Church Road, Jonesville, but Randy Crocker, safety and security coordinator for the Union County School District, said that no students or parents of students were involved in the accident. The intersection does not have a traffic light even though the district has requested one since the school was built. Crocker said S.C. House District 42 Rep. Mike Anthony has also requested a traffic light for the intersection. He said the S.C. Department of Transportation conducted a study and concluded that there was not enough traffic to justify a traffic light.

YMCA Member Spotlight

Sylvia Clevenger joined the YMCA on Jan. 25, 2012, after her doctor diagnosed her with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He suggested that she start an exercise program. On her first visit to the YMCA, she could not say a complete sentence without gasping for air. She began attending the Strength for Daily Living classes faithfully and now is able to count repetitions in the class. She says she feels 100 percent better and the class has made a tremendous difference in her life.

Union County is sponsoring the Meansville Riley Water Company's application for a $350,000 grant through the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority. The grant would enable the company to install approximately 31,000 linear feet of new water main on eight different roadways and improve water quality. If requested to do so, should the county sponsor more such grant applications by other local water companies?
