The program “Hymns of William Bradbury,” was presented by Amy Bruce and Kathleen Read. Bradbury was born in York County, Maine, Oct. 6, 1816. After studying organ in Boston, he became organist of the First Baptist Church, New York City, and was choir director at several Baptist churches, while creating a style of juvenile music that swept the country. After studying music and teaching techniques in Europe he returned to New York and published 59 collections of sacred as well as secular music. Included in the program were those well-known hymns with the music he composed and the stories of the writing of the words that were shared before the singing of each hymn: “Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us,” “Jesus Loves Me,” “Just As I Am,” “The Solid Rock,” “O Come, Angel Band,” “Sweet Hour of Prayer,” and “He Leadeth Me.”

The next meeting will be Sept. 3, 2013.

Union County is sponsoring the Meansville Riley Water Company's application for a $350,000 grant through the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority. The grant would enable the company to install approximately 31,000 linear feet of new water main on eight different roadways and improve water quality. If requested to do so, should the county sponsor more such grant applications by other local water companies?
