LOCKHART — The gymnasium at Lockhart Middle School had an old familiar feeling on Thursday night as two long-time rivals took to the basketball court and a packed out homecoming crowd saw the Red Devils seal wins over Whitmire in both contests.

In the first game of doubleheader action, Whitmire took the Lady Devils to the wire before Elizabeth Parks hit the game-winning shot for the 20-19 final.

“This game was neck and neck from the beginning,” said Lockhart coach Lori Roberts. “It was truly a nail-biter and I’m very proud of the effort our girls gave to get the win.”

Parks led the Devils scoring with nine points. Heather Petty, Chasity McCluney and Shealia Lindsey each contributed three points and Olivia Brannon added two.

“It was really good to have wins for both teams tonight,” said Lockhart girls coach Lori Roberts. “We had our homecoming festivities and there was a big crowd. We want to encourage everyone to come back out for our final regular season game on Monday, January 28 against Jonesville. We will be honoring our eighth grade players and cheerleaders.”

In boys action, Lockhart overcame a case of Homecoming jitters to secure a 35-30 win.

The Red Devils got off to a sluggish start and Whitmire capitalized, taking a 14-6 lead in the first quarter. Lockhart found its rhythm in the second frame, doubling the Wolverines’ output to close the halftime margin to two points, 20-18.

In an evenly matched third quarter the Red Devils snatched a 27-24 lead and never looked back.

Hunter Plemmons paced Lockhart with 10 points and Ryan Vaughan turned in nine. Ethan Bailey chipped in six points. Jay Vaughan and Zach Gordon each added four and Justin Henderson contributed two.

Union County is sponsoring the Meansville Riley Water Company's application for a $350,000 grant through the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority. The grant would enable the company to install approximately 31,000 linear feet of new water main on eight different roadways and improve water quality. If requested to do so, should the county sponsor more such grant applications by other local water companies?
