UNION — According to the unofficial results of Tuesday’s special election, Yates Giles is the newest member of Union’s City Council.
The District 3 seat on city council has been vacant since the death of councilman Keith Henderson on January 27. Henderson was serving his third term on city council at the time of his death. Tuesday’s special election was held to elect a council member to fill Henderson’s unexpired term.
Three candidates — Yates Giles, Vicki Morgan and Robin Price — ran for the seat, and according to the unofficial totals Giles had 94 votes (48 percent); Morgan had 86 votes (44 percent); and Price had 14 votes (7 percent).
“This is very nice, very rewarding,” Giles said, just after the totals were announced. “I’ve met some super nice folks that I had not met before, but I hope to see them many times during this tenure of service to Union. I think the people have spoken.”
The breakdown of votes according to precincts is as follows:
- Absentee: Giles — 21, Morgan — 15, Price — 1
- Ward 3, Box 1: Giles — 24, Morgan — 26, Price — 0
- Ward 4, Box 1: Giles — 25, Morgan — 0, Price — 5
- Ward 4, Box 2: Giles — 3, Morgan — 4, Price — 5
- Excelsior: Giles — 19, Morgan — 33, Price — 3
- East Buffalo: Giles — 2, Morgan — 8, Price — 0
Giles said he appreciates all the support he received.
“I do appreciate the people who voted for me,” he said. “The people who didn’t, I will represent them in the same manner as the people who did.”
These election results will be certified at 10 a.m. Friday in the City of Union Municipal Clerk’s office.
