UNION — A local middle school student is one of 25 students in the nation to receive a prestigious leadership award.
Kasie Roark — a student at Sims Middle School — was awarded the John W. Harris Leadership Award during the South Carolina Junior Beta Club convention held Jan. 24-25 in Myrtle Beach.
Only 25 of the awards were presented nationally, and Roark was the only recipient from South Carolina. The award was presented to Roark in front of the other 3,800 members present at the Junior Beta Club convention.
The award honors Roark for work she had done voluntarily, without seeking acknowledgment. Sims Middle School said Roark has exhibited true leadership skills through serving as president of Sims’ Junior Beta Club. A school press release read as follows:
“Kasie Roark shows great initiative, self-direction, honesty, cooperation, dependability and reliability. There is an innate caring to her nature that is truly contagious among all who know her.”
Roark received a trophy, certificate and scholarship for the Broyhill Leadership Conference, which will be held this summer at Limestone College.
This was Sims Middle School’s first time attending the State Junior Beta Club Convention. They were able to do so thanks to their generous sponsors — A & J Recycling, the City of Union, Mrs. Bishop M. Garrison, Show-N-Shine Cruiser Car Club, Lee’s Body Shop, J & B Electrical Service, The Inn at Merridun, Carolinas Health Associates, the Town of Carlisle, Union Lions Club, Bantam Chef, Union Awning & Iron Works, Materials Unlimited, Lancaster’s Heating & Air, China One, McDonalds of Union and the Union County Supervisor.
Each year, Sims Middle School students who demonstrate outstanding character and have a 90 or above in all classes at the end of the first semester are invited to join the Junior Beta Club.
The John W. Harris Leadership Award is named in honor of The National Beta Club’s beloved founder and provides national recognition to 50 of The National Beta Club’s most deserving members.
