UNION — The presentation of a school report card and recognition of longtime board members were among items discussed at Monday night’s school board meeting.
Monday’s meeting of the Union County Board of School Trustees began with the recognition of two board members — Buck Peay and Jane Hammett — by the S.C. School Board Association. Buck Peay was recognized for 25 years of service and Jane Hammett was recognized for 15 years of service.
In other business, Sims Middle School Principal Mickey Connolly spoke to the board regarding Sims’ 2012 South Carolina Report Card. Sims Middle School received an absolute rating of “average” and an improvement rating of “good.” The school’s ESEA Federal rating was 79.6, which is a “C” letter grade.
Board member and longtime teacher Jane Wilkes told Connolly he and Sims faculty and staff members should be commended because that is the school’s best rating in quite some time. Wilkes also pointed out that although it is the school’s best rating in awhile, the ratings have steadily improved.
Director of Secondary Education Cindy Langley seconded that, pointing out that the school’s “Good” improvement rating indicated such.
Connolly also pointed out some of the school’s accomplishments including having nine South Carolina Junior Scholars, a 2011 Palmetto Silver Award, an Academic Challenge team, SSR Emphasis on Reading, Enrichment in the Arts & Technology and being AdvancED accredited.
Connolly also pointed out improvements in the percentage of students meeting ELA standards in 7th and 8th grades, a 10 percent increase in 7th graders who scored exemplary in math, percentage of those scoring exemplary in science and social studies, and an improvement in writing scores from the previous year for 8th grade students.
Connolly mentioned that areas to address for improvement are reducing the number of students not meeting standards in all subject areas, increasing the number of students scoring exemplary, improving student achievement in science and continuing to meet the needs of disabled, minority and economically disadvantaged populations.
