LOCKHART — A grant awarded to Lockhart School will provide a “Garden of Wisdom.”

Lockhart School was awarded a 2012-2013 Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant in the amount of $2,770 from the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation.

Toolbox for Education grants are reserved for approved school improvement projects that can be completed within one year of grant receipt.

The grant was applied for by third grade teacher Leslie Owens, who plans to have her students implement what will be known as a Garden of Wisdom as part of their curriculum. The garden will encourage both reading and science as students will plant flowers and miniature fruit trees, and when it is finished, it will serve as a reading garden/outdoor classroom.

“I am always appreciative of teachers who are innovative and try to make learning more exciting for students,” said Principal Betsy Trakas. “I am pleased Ms. Owens was able to get this grant. The garden will be a nice addition to our school.”

Tamiann Adams — parent and member of the School Improvement Council — said she is looking forward to helping with the garden, and she looks to recruit helpers who can saw, drill and hammer the garden’s pergola and layout a pathway.

“We are so very excited our dedication and positive energy went just the way we wanted it to go!” Adams said.
