UNION COUNTY — Union County’s highly decorated quarterback can add another accolade to his already impressive resume. The Union Daily Times selects Keiston Smith as its first annual Most Outstanding Athlete of the Year for Union County High School. The news should come as no surprise after the numbers Smith posted as the Jackets’ dual threat quarterback this past season.
In his senior year at UCHS, Smith racked up 4,604 passing yards and 42 touchdowns while rushing for 1,156 yards and 21 touchdowns. He led the Jackets to a state championship appearance where he threw for 264 yards and rushed for 102 more, scoring two touchdowns from the ground and two from the air.
In addition to being named The Union Daily Times’ Athlete of the Year, Smith received the Most Valuable Player award during Union County High School’s football banquet. He was an All State selection and Region 3-3A’s Player of the Year. Smith received several honors throughout 2012 including the HSSR 3A Player of the Year Award, SCVarsity.com’s Player of the Year award and statewide Player of the Year Award. He owns the Spartanburg Herald Journal Player of the Year Award and was one of two South Carolina quarterbacks to be selected to the Shrine Bowl team.
Smith will continue his football career at Hutchinson Community College, a two-year program located in Hutchinson, Kan. The college signed a total of 20 players to Division I football programs from the 2012 class (nine of whom joined BCS programs) and produced wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson, who was selected the 29th overall pick in this year’s NFL draft by Minnesota.
Smith received a full scholarship to the elite junior college and plans to use a single semester to raise his stock among college recruiters.
