UNION — The Union Music Club met March 12 at the home of Susan Lawson with Martha Whitener and Mrs. Lawson as hostesses.

President Kathy Stepp welcomed the members to the meeting. The members recited the Invocation, Collect, and sang the Federation Hymn with Tommy Bishop at the piano.

Mr. Bishop introduced and played the song of the month, “Wait for the Wagon,” words and music attributed to R. Bishop Buckley in 1851. By the time of the Civil War, it was firmly established as a favorite and was sung all over the United States.

Carolyn Turner and Kathleen Read played a piano duet, Mozart’s “Sonata No. 2.”

Amy Bruce and and Kathleen Read presented the program, “The Life and Music of Fanny Crosby.” Miss Crosby, though blinded at the age of six weeks old through improper medical treatment, wrote more than 8,000 hymn and gospel song texts in her lifetime of 95 years. She was often called “The Queen of Gospel Songs.” The many experiences she had in her life, happy and sad, inspired her to compose in her head, the beautiful words we have sung through the years.

The hymns and gospel song stories included in the program were “Blessed Assurance,” “I Am Thine, O Lord,” “Praise Him, Praise Him,” “Safe In The Arms of Jesus,” “All The Way My Savior Leads Me,” “Near The Cross,” “Rescue The Perishing,” and “To God Be The Glory.”

The meeting adjourned after the singing of “The Gift of Song” by Lana M. Bailey.
