UNION — Some temporary jobs in the Jonesville area could become permanent ones if those hired to do them turn out to be good workers who are willing to travel to other work sites around the country.
Katherine Pendergrass, business services consultant for SCWorks Union, announced Friday that job fairs will be held at the SCWorks Union office at 103 E. Main St., Union, on Tuesday, June 11, and Thursday, June 13. Pendergrass said Tuesday’s job fair will be sponsored by EDR Inc., a material handling company based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, which is looking to hire laborers. Thursday’s job fair will be sponsored by American Services which Pendergrass said is looking to hire janitorial personnel. She said both companies are looking to hire people to work in the Jonesville area.
EDR Project Coordinator Chet Willemstyn said Friday that the company is looking to 10-15 people to put together pallet rack systems for an EDR client in Jonesville. Willemstyn said EDR is primarily looking for laborers who will receive starting pay of $10 an hour. He said it is possible, however, that the company could also hire team leaders whose starting pay will be higher.
While he declined to name the client in Jonesville, Willemstyn said the project will be 10-12 weeks in duration. Even though the project is scheduled to be completed within three months, Willemstyn said its possible that some of those hired could continue working for EDR.
“It depends on the situation, but if someone is a good worker and willing to travel I’d have no problem putting them on permanently,” Willemstyn said. “We’ve been in business for almost 20 years and we work across the country and so there’s a lot of travel involved. We’ve just recently completed projects in Connecticut and Chicago and we’re currently working on projects in Greensboro, N.C., and Detroit and Battle Creek, Michigan. The first phase of the project in Greensboro will continue through to the end of September and then there will be a break and then the second phase will begin and continue into 2014.
“We’ve just signed a two-year contract with a major box store that we’re six months into,” he said. “It involves resetting all their stores. That means we have five crews crossing the country to reset each store.”
Anyone interested in working for EDR should attend Tuesday’s job fair which will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Willemstyn said applicants should bring with them a resume, photo identification, and their Social Security card.
For those interested in working for EDR but are unable to attend the job fair, Willemstyn said they should contact Katherine Pendergrass at SCWorks at 864-427-4119.
American Services
Thursday’s job fair will also be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and those hired will also have the opportunity to work on a permanent basis for the company sponsoring the event.
Cindy Mohrmeyer, company services representative for American Services, said that she and a representative of the company’s subsidiary, ACI Janitorial Services, will be looking to hire 10-15 people. Mohrmeyer said she will assist job-seekers with their applications and then the ACI representative will conduct one-on-one interviews. She said applicants determined to be “strong candidates” will then be asked to come to the company’s Spartanburg office the next day to “fill out new hire packet and go to work.”
Mohrmeyer said ACI is providing janitorial services for a client in the Jonesville area and those hired at Thursday’s job fair will work there as ACI employees. The duties of ACI employees at the Jonesville site will include but are not limited to:
• Cleaning the lobby and all front offices including vacuuming, dusting, emptying the trash, and mopping on a daily basis.
• Cleaning all canteen and coffee break areas on a daily basis.
• Cleaning office restrooms and women’s locker/restroom on a daily basis.
• Cleaning the QC lab on a daily basis.
• Cleaning water fountains on a daily basis.
• Sweeping and mopping inaccessible areas in the warehouse in sections on a daily basis.
• Cleaning janitor closets on a weekly basis.
• Cleaning yellow safety rails twice per month.
• Getting along with others.
