UNION — A Sunday afternoon radio program looks to keep the genre of quartet gospel music alive.
Andre Tate grew up singing traditional gospel music in a quartet and he is doing what he can to keep the genre alive. Tate is the son of the late Rev. Dr. L.T. Tate of Gaffney, and he was involved with the music of his father’s church for years.
He is also the Assistant Minister of Music at Wyatt’s Chapel Baptist Church in Buffalo, where he has played music — as well as assisted with the children’s choir, mass choir and all-male chorus — on a weekly basis since June 2009.
“One of the most important things about Andre is he is very supportive of church activities and events, even those that take place outside of regular Sunday morning services,” said the Rev. Elijah Ray, pastor of Wyatt’s Chapel. “He has been with us over three years, and because of his faithfulness, several of us thought it would be nice to honor him.”
In an effort to sustain the gospel genre on which he was raised, Tate hosts a weekly segment on WLOI 910 AM called “The Quartet Show.” The show airs on from 1-3 p.m. each Sunday.
“We share what’s in the community and play nothing but the best in quartet gospel music,” Tate said.
Tate said the show often features live interviews with various artists such as Bishop Darren McFadden, The Gospel Legends of Columbia, and Luther Barnes of Rocky Mount, N.C.
The show originally began as “The Quartet Hour,” but has expanded due to the support of local churches, choirs and civic groups.
“We’re looking to serve Union County and the surrounding areas,” Tate said, adding that there is the possibility of another show launching during weekdays.
Listeners can hear the show live each week by visiting www.WOLI-AM.com from 1-3 p.m. on Sundays.
Any church, pastor or small business looking to be involved with The Quartet Show may contact Andre Tate by calling (864) 357-0484.
