Crime Report

The Union Public Safety Department reported the following arrest:

— Joseph Leroy Rice, 34, of 104 Hicks Street, Union, was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest on January 23. According to the incident report, officers responded to Rice’s residence in reference to a disturbance call around 9:23 p.m. on Jan. 22, and Rice was “being very loud and boisterous and using profane language.” Officers got Rice to calm down and left the scene. Then, around 12:50 a.m., officers were called back to the residence for another disturbance. The report states Rice said he wanted to go to jail to get peace and quiet and began to yell. When officers pulled out handcuffs and told Rice he was under arrest for disorderly conduct, he pulled his arm away and backed up. He was cuffed and taken to the patrol car, and he struggled with officers as they attempted to search him. Rice was transported to Union County Jail.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office reported the following arrest:

— Robert McKanic, Jr., 24, of 221 East Main Street, Union, was charged as a fugitive from justice on January 22. According to the incident report, McKanic was arrested by the Union Public Safety Department on Jan. 18 and taken to Union County Jail. When a records check was run on him, the check indicated that he is wanted on an outstanding warrant issued by the New Orleans, La. Police Department charging him with attempted second-degree murder. The report states Sheriff David Taylor will contact the Union County Magistrate’s Office to obtain a warrant on McKanic to detain him for extradition.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office reported the following incidents:

— A resident of Mill Street in Union reported on January 22 that she had received phone calls from someone asking for her personal information. She said the person wanted her social security number and said the information was for her Medicare. Knowing the calls were a scam, she did not give her information out, but she wanted the sheriff’s office to be aware of the incident.

— The owner of a rental property on John Street in Union reported on January 21 that a tenant who had moved out of the residence over the weekend had taken a washer, dryer and refrigerator. The owner said the tenant never reported to him that those items were stolen or that anything had happened to them.

Union County is sponsoring the Meansville Riley Water Company's application for a $350,000 grant through the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority. The grant would enable the company to install approximately 31,000 linear feet of new water main on eight different roadways and improve water quality. If requested to do so, should the county sponsor more such grant applications by other local water companies?
