UNION — Some diners at Pizza Hut helped the Team Leroy Relay For Life team move closer to its goal of raising $10,000 for the fight against cancer.

The team is named for Leroy “Little Man” Belue, special projects manager for the Union Housing Authority, who died from cancer on Jan. 13, 2013. Team Leroy, which includes Belue’s widow, Beth, is working to raise $10,000 for Relay For Life through a series of fund raising events. The most recent fundraiser was through Pizza Hut which donated 10 percent of its profits generated between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. this past Thursday.

“They raised $110 for us,” Beth Belue said Monday. “It puts us closer to our goal of raising $10,000. With this we now have around $8,300 and we still have the Run/Walk on May 18.”

Pizza Hut Restaurant Manager Barbara Bradburn said she and the rest of the management and staff of the restaurant was happy to help support such a good cause.

“We were just wanting to do what we could for Relay For Life,” Bradburn said Monday. “It is a good cause and we just wanted to do whatever we could.”

Other fundraisers Team Leroy has held include a bake sale in March that raised $1,500 and a yard sale at the Union County Stadium earlier this month that raised $800. During the yard sale, team members raised another $150 by selling tickets to a raffle for a gun.

The next fundraiser will be the Little Man’s Cha-Ching 5K run/walk at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 18 at Foster Park. Individuals and groups (10 or more) must pay a registration fee of $30 and $25, respectively. (Groups must turn in registration forms all together with one check). Packet pickup and late registration will begin at 6 a.m. on the day of the walk/run.

Overall awards will be given to the top two male and top two female finishers. Awards will also be given to the top three males and top three females in each age division — 10 and under, 11-14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 50-59, 60-69, 70 and over.

Checks may be made and mailed to Beth Belue, 1017 Kelly Road, Union, S.C., 29379 with Cha-Ching 5k on the memo line.

The annual Union County Relay For Life event will be held Friday, May 10 at 7 p.m. at the Union County Fairgrounds. A Survivor Reception will be held at 6 p.m. at Clemson Extension.

Union County is sponsoring the Meansville Riley Water Company's application for a $350,000 grant through the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority. The grant would enable the company to install approximately 31,000 linear feet of new water main on eight different roadways and improve water quality. If requested to do so, should the county sponsor more such grant applications by other local water companies?
