UNION — The Union County JV basketball teams picked up a pair of wins over Woodruff on Thursday night.

The Lady Jackets kicked off the double header with a 21-14 win, their first of the season. Union County led 11-7 at halftime and matched Woodruff’s output in the third quarter for a 16-12 score headed into the final frame. The Wolverines closed the margin to four points with a put-back off an offensive board late in the fourth but the solid Union County defense held them scoreless for the remainder of the game. With less than one minute left in regulation, Macy Scarbrough nailed a three-pointer from the right wing to seal the deal for the Lady Jackets.

In boys action: The Jackets turned up the offense on Thursday night and secured a 50-35 win over Woodruff. The Wolverines took a 10-6 lead in the opening minutes of the contest before Union County took control. Noah Voiselle hit a short jumper and the Jackets forced a turnover on the ensuing possession. J.D. Cheek brought the ball up the court and split a couple of defenders to put up a floater. The shot was good for the 11-10 Union County lead at the end of the first quarter.

The teams traded a couple of baskets in the second period before the Jackets went on a 10-2 run during which Cheek scored on three straight lay-ups.

Union County put the game out of reach in the second half, marching to a 50-35 region win.

Cheek led the scoring with 11 points and Montray Feaster netted nine.

Union County is sponsoring the Meansville Riley Water Company's application for a $350,000 grant through the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority. The grant would enable the company to install approximately 31,000 linear feet of new water main on eight different roadways and improve water quality. If requested to do so, should the county sponsor more such grant applications by other local water companies?
