Foster Park Star Readers
Save the Children announced the recipients for their fall reading awards at Foster Park Elementary School for the time period September- December 2012. Foster Park students received the Gold Star Certificate. This certificate acknowledges and commends the exemplary after school program for improvement in meeting or maintaining goals in all of the following categories: the percent of children reading 90 percent or higher (independently); the percent of children scoring below 90 percent correct on quizzes; and the average percent of quizzes passed. This award recognizes the hard work of the students during guided independent reading time (GIRP). We are proud of our Save the Children students.

• The Union County Council Committee on Public Works, Roads, and Bridges and County Property meets at 5:30 p.m. in the Law Library at the Union County Courthouse to discuss bridges, roads and equipment. The public is invited to attend.

• A breast cancer benefit for Kathy Farr Burgess is held from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. at Shadys with entertainment provided by Cadillac High and The Bud Newman Band. A silent auction will beheld and T-shirts, coozies and bracelets will be sold. All money raised will go to help the family with medical bills and expenses. • The second annual Evening Easter Egg Scramble is held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Union County Fairgrounds. This free event, sponsored by the Union County Recreation Department and Woodmen of the World, will take place rain or shine. Festivities include photos with the Easter Bunny, Woodmen of the World’s Child ID Program, face painting and games, prizes and more. Concessions will be available. Each child should bring a basket. All children must be accompanied by an adult. The “scrambles” are divided into three categories: 1-3 years old, 4-7 years old, and 8-10 years old. • James Chapel Baptist Church, 527 Pinckney St., Carlisle, holds spring revival today and Wednesday at 7 p.m. Bishop Joseph Stringfellow from Chester is the revivalist. Pastor T.A. Moore. The public is invited.

• The Union County Recreation Department hold Youth Basketball Registration through March 22. The registration fee is $5 per participant. Registration will be for 3-4 year olds for T-Ball and for 5-7 year olds for Coach Pitch. The birth date cut-off date is Sept. 1, 2013. Participants in T-Ball must be 3 years old by then and Coach Pitch participants cannot turn 8 years old that date. Parents should have birth certificate and proof of medical insurance at the time of registration. All fees must be paid when registering. Late registration will be held from March 25 to March 29 and a late fee of $5 will be added to the registration fee. For more information call 429-1670.

“Painting with Coffee” meets from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Tuesday at the Union County Arts Council’s Gallery on Main Street in Union. Any artist working in any medium can attend this informal group of like-minded artists. Call UCAC at 864-429-2817 for more information.

• The Union County Recreation Department is accepting new students for its After-School Program. Registration fee and weekly fees charged. Students ages 5-12 years old are picked up from Foster Park, Monarch and Buffalo Elementary, and Sims Middle School. Union County Council holds its regular monthly meeting the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Grand Jury Room of the Union County Courthouse. The dates for the 2013 meetings are March 12, April 9, May 14, June 11, July 9, Aug. 13, Sept. 10, Oct. 8, Nov. 12 and Dec. 10.

• The Austin Rehab Relay For Life team is raising money through three ongoing fundraisers: selling cookbooks for $10, selling short-sleeved T-shirts for $12 and long-sleeved T-shirts for $15, and $1 raffle tickets for a three-month fitness. The raffle drawing will be held May 13 at the center. For information contact Mandy at 429-3003.

• The Covenant Baptist Church Relay For Life Team holds a Sunday meal at the church as an ongoing fundraiser. For information contact Ponnee at 427-3102.

• The Union County Beekeepers Association offers a seven-week certified beekeeping class from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Tuesday. Registration is required. Union County is sponsoring the Meansville Riley Water Company's application for a $350,000 grant through the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority. The grant would enable the company to install approximately 31,000 linear feet of new water main on eight different roadways and improve water quality. If requested to do so, should the county sponsor more such grant applications by other local water companies?
