Union County survived a scare in the top of the first inning when Woodruff loaded bases with no outs but managed to escape unscathed. Peyton Martin fielded a grounder and made the force play at home. Catcher Ashley Vaughan stepped on the plate and tossed it down to first base for the double play before Martin recorded a strikeout for out number three.
“The defense was outstanding tonight,” said Union County Head Coach Danny Gault.
Union County plated the winning run in the bottom of the second when Kanani Lodge doubled and scored on a base hit by Vinson. The Lady Jackets added some insurance runs in the fifth when Dexlie Inman RBI doubled, Abby Allen sacrificed and CeCe Morman doubled to drive in Inman.
Union County will host Broome in the second region contest of the season on Friday night at the Timken Complex.
In JV Action
The Lady Jackets touched up Woodruff’s pitching staff for 10 hits on Wednesday night enroute to a 15-2 win.
Union County and Woodruff exchanged the lead four times in the first two innings before the Lady Jackets rallied in the third and put the game out of reach. Laina Vaughan tossed a two-hitter with four strikeouts.
