UNION — After seeing the first two travel ball tournaments of the season halted due to rain, the 13U RiverRats baseball team completed four games this past weekend at the Under Armour Southeast Regional held at the Timken Sports Complex.
The RiverRats won two and lost two.
“I’ve told them that winning is good — everyone wants to win championships — but our most important goal as coaches is to teach these young men the game of baseball the correct way,” said RiverRats Coach John Parks. “We want them to be the best they can be. Then the championships will come.”
In game one of the tournament, the RiverRats came up short in a 3-2 loss to the Palmetto Raptors. Later in the day, the Rats claimed their first win of the season, 6-5, over the Warriors.
On Sunday, the RiverRats met the Raptors for the second time of tournament play and fell, 4-2 before finishing strong with a 10-2 win over the Mauldin Mavs.
“The boys are adjusting pretty well with this being our first year competing in 13U,” said Parks. “We still have a lot to learn but we’re getting there. We have a good group of kids on this team and as long as they continue to work hard we will be just fine.”
Parks is joined on the coaching staff by Dennis Cooper, Matt Latham and Ronnie “Bop” Latham.
“Coach Bop, from day one, has said TLC, which is Trust, Love, and Communicate,” said Parks. “And that now seems to be our motto. He has said it over and over, ‘If you don’t have those three things, then we don’t have a team.’”
The 13U RiverRats are scheduled to participate their next tournament on June 22 and 23.
On Thursday, July 18, the RiverRats will hold a fundraiser at Pizza Inn in Hillcrest (Spartanburg) from 5-8 p.m.
