UNION — After leading the Union County girls basketball team to a Region AAA-III Championship this season, Kristin Giles, CeCe Moorman and Mariana Eison were selected to the All-Conference team.
Giles, a senior guard, averaged 17 points, 4 steals and 5 assists per game. She eclipsed 1,000 career scoring points midway through the season and was also named All-State.
“I was really surprised to receive both, I expected one or the other,” said Giles. “It means a lot to me, especially getting All-State because that’s what seniors work for at the end.”
Union County Head Coach Angela Burke wasn’t surprised to learn that her standout guard had received both honors.
“K.G.’s had an impressive year,” said Burke. “It was a tremendous accomplishment for her to score over 1,000 points and there is not a doubt in my mind CeCe and Mari will follow in her footsteps.”
This year, Moorman, a sophomore post player, averaged 13 points 12.4 rebounds and .6 blocks per game. She netted a career high 22 points against Chapman and she plans to elevate her game by working in the off-season.
“I’m going to work on shooting at the elbow more,” she said. “I need to be able to get points outside the box. We’re gonna miss our seniors next year, but I think we’ll still be strong.”
Eison, also a sophomore, played small forward for Union County and can handle the ball exceptionally well. She averaged 10 points with six rebounds per game and had a season high 19 points against Chapman.
“That night my shots were falling and that built up my confidence,” Eison said. “I’m going to work on being more consistent with my shots and on being a great leader for my team. I learned this season that you have to give 100 percent for four quarters, you never give up. And I learned that hard work pays off. ”
Giles plans to play basketball at the collegiate level although she isn’t decided yet as to where she’ll do it.
Burke said that Giles’ leadership was invaluable to the Lady Jackets this year and that Giles will be an asset to whichever school she chooses.
“We’re going to miss K.G. and the leadership she brought to the team. She will truly be missed,” said Burke. “I feel confident our other two captains (Eison and Moorman) will continue to lead our team next year. Even though CeCe and Mari are sophomores, they both showed a lot of maturity as captains and they helped our team to a region title.”
Burke added that Giles, Moorman and Eison have improved all season through hard work and determination.
“All three young ladies have a tremendous work ethic on and off the court,” she noted. “They’ve earned the trust and respect of their teammates and I am extremely proud to be their coach.”
